The U.S. Constitution Second Amendment

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Currently there are multiple bills in Congress to do exactly that … infringe on our rights to bear arms. If you are a law abiding citizen of the United States and believe that you should have the right to carry (open or concealed) a weapon on your person, in your car or in your home … you may want to get involved and let your Congressional Representatives and Senators know exactly how you feel.

Some of the highlights of many of these bills have come to my attention though a mailing I received from the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) and I wanted to share them with you and give you my opinions.

#1 Do you like to take your kid Hunting or to the Range?

One of the bills is trying to stop you from doing this. It is requiring a federal license for those who want to fire or possess a firearm – and to get that license you must be 21 years of age or older.

My first time to visit a Rifle Range was at the tender age of 18 after joining the U.S. Army. I was embarrassed, to say the least, that I didn’t even know how to hold a rifle at the time because my mom and dad did not believe in firearms, so as kids, we never had the privilege of firing any gun. I was years behind most of the guys in my company considering that 90% of them had some previous experience with hand guns and/or rifles.

I worked hard and was eventually awarded an Expert badge for the M-14 Rifle and a Marksman badge for the .45 Caliber Pistol.

#2 Do you think your neighbors and every local criminal should know exactly what firearms you own?

Under some of the proposals in Congress that is exactly what could happen since they are calling for a National Registry that will list every gun you own and that will be completely searchable on the internet by the public.

Do we no longer have a right to privacy in this country? Why must we bear all of ourselves to the public things we should be keeping private? I personally do not think it is anyone’s business what firearms a person owns unless that person wants the public to know. I personally know people (friends and associates) who have between “0” and over “200” guns in their home and in their possession. None of them are criminals or of the criminal mind to my knowledge. Some of theses guns are out in the open and some are locked in gun safes. I would imagine they are all loaded – or at least I would treat them as such.

#3 How do you feel about Government Insurance to “Own a Firearm?”

That’s correct … one such Bill is going to require the owner of a firearm to pay $800 per year … year after year … to the Federal Government for each firearm you own. If your spouse also likes to shoot and owns a gun, he/she will also have to pay this $800.

Since I have five weapons and my wife has one … this will cost me somewhere in the neighborhood of $4,800 per year for “My right to bear arms.” God help my friend that has a couple hundred firearms.

They may not take away “your right” to bear arms … but they are going to try to “charge you” for it.

#4 How do you feel about 25 years in Federal Prison?

If you want to go to the range and take along a friend or spouse to shoot that has never shot, you will need to personally notify the Attorney General of the United States.

Or, if you are going hunting with your best friend and they need to borrow one of your rifles (perhaps theirs is in the shop or they just don’t own one), you need to make sure the Attorney General knows about those plans too.

It is my understanding that if you fail to file the proper documentation before someone else touches your gun, you’ll spend a MINIMUM of 15 years – and up to 25 years – in a Federal Penitentiary.

#5 How will it feel to have your family members go through a psychological exam?

That’s correct. One bill is calling for a government psychological exam for each family member (adults and children) in a home where a gun is to be kept.

This is right out of the Chinese Communist Playbook. It appears that each family member, you, your spouse, your former spouse, your children and any close friends will be examined by a government psychologist before you are allowed to purchase a firearm.

Once examined, that government psychologist will decide whether to “accept” or “reject” you for gun ownership. If you are thinking about buying a gun … now may be better than later. Since about 200 million American’s currently own at least one gun I think it would be hard for them to start the examination process on those that already own one … unless they are trying to buy another after the process starts.

#6 Are you concerned that Criminals will have nothing to fear from the guns you keep in your home?

Yes, if one of these bills passes in it’s present form it will force millions of Americans to keep every gun they own in a locked safe with a trigger lock on each gun and ammunition in a separate locked safe.

There is an old saying that says, “Police are minutes away when seconds count.” Now when you hear that “Bump in the night” your gun and ammo may be minutes away when seconds count. I’m wondering what good the gun will do if you have to unlock it … then unlock the trigger … then unlock the ammo … then load up the gun to shoot the criminal that is trying to do you harm.

Why should the criminals fear the guns you may have at home?

#7 And, what about all that shot gun ammo being banned forever?

Yes, there is even a bill in congress to ban 12-gauge, 16-gauge, and 20-gauge shotgun shells. I have not read anything about the 10-guage or the 28-gauge shells or even the 4-10 shells … but I’d imagine they will not be left out.

The point is you can own a shotgun, keep it in a locked safe with a locked trigger, pay $800 per year for the right to own it, and make sure your friends don’t touch it without notifying the US Attorney General — but the gun itself without ammo would be worthless.

This bill is known as H.R.127 – Sabika Sheikh Firearm Licensing and Registration Act and was introduced on 01/04/2021 by Representative Jackson Lee (D-TX) and on 03/01/2021 was Referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
